Four years after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a plastic bag in a wooded area of Cumming, Georgia, authorities have arrested the woman they believe to be the child’s biological mother. Karima Jiwani, 40, was charged Thursday with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, reckless abandonment, cruelty to children in the first degree and other charges.
At a press conference Friday, Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman detailed how the woman came to be put under arrest. “This child was tied up in a plastic bag and thrown into the woods like a bag of trash,” Freeman said.
The baby girl, who has been named “Baby India” by authorities, was discovered in the woods in June 2019 after a 911 call came in around 10 p.m. She was taken to a local hospital and placed in the care of a foster family.
Jiwani was arrested by Deputy Terry Roper, who helped rescue the baby almost four years ago. She is currently being held at the Forsyth County Jail without bond.
