West Virginia Governor Jim Justice is expected to announce his campaign for the U.S. Senate on Thursday, joining the race to oust incumbent Senator Joe Manchin. Justice, a 72-year-old billionaire coal magnate, switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP a few months after taking office in 2017, and declared his support for former President Donald Trump. He has also left the door open for a possible presidential run, telling “Face the Nation” in March “I’m not taking anything off the table.”

In response to Justice’s Senate bid, Manchin released a statement saying he is “laser focused on doing the job West Virginians elected me to do — lowering healthcare costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, shoring up American energy security and getting our fiscal house in order.”

The West Virginia Senate race is one of the GOP’s best opportunities to flip a seat as Republicans seek to win a majority in the upper chamber. Manchin is viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in a red state that voted heavily for Trump.

Justice is expected to make his announcement Thursday at the posh Greenbriar Resort he owns. He’s also expected to make an announcement Thursday afternoon at his Greenbrier resort.

The West Virginia Senate race is sure to be a heated one as Justice and Manchin battle for the seat. With Justice’s support for Trump and Manchin’s moderate stance, the race is sure to be an interesting one. It remains to be seen if Manchin will run for re-election in 2024.
