Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has threatened to repeal a major law he negotiated and helped pass less than a year ago if the Biden administration does not honor the agreement.
The Inflation Reduction Act, which was passed in 2020, includes billions of dollars in tax credits and deductions targeted toward reducing carbon emissions and fighting climate change. Manchin said he would vote to repeal the law if the administration does not honor what they said they would do and continue to liberalize what is supposed to be invested in over the next 10 years.
During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Monday night, Manchin noted that $384 billion of the Inflation Reduction Act was allocated for energy security. He said he has not heard the word “energy security” out of the administration’s mouth since the bill was passed.
Manchin said he would do everything in his power to prevent the administration from disregarding the agreement they made. He added that he would vote to repeal his own bill if the administration does not change course.
The Inflation Reduction Act was a sweeping bill negotiated with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) last year. It includes major climate, health and tax provisions. It is unclear how the Biden administration will respond to Manchin’s threat to repeal the bill.
