At least four people were killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting at a Louisville, Kentucky bank on Monday morning. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the tragedy in the same day’s press briefing, calling on Congress to take action to address gun violence.

“This is awful,” said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, his voice shaking. “Two of my close friends were among those killed, and a third among those hospitalized.”

When asked if President Joe Biden has exhausted all legal efforts to further combat the issue through executive action, Jean-Pierre said, “So, there [are] actions that we have taken. The thing is the president cannot do it aloneā€¦ there is a legislative process that needs to happen and Congress needs to act.”

The gunman, believed to be a former bank employee, died at the scene following a gunfight with responding officers. Police have not yet released a motive for the shooting.

The tragedy in Louisville is the latest in a string of mass shootings in the United States, and Jean-Pierre’s comments reflect the Biden administration’s stance that Congress must take action to address gun violence. The president has already taken executive action to strengthen background checks and close loopholes in gun sales.
