WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle have expressed their concern and support for American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia on espionage charges for at least two months.
In a statement posted to Instagram late Saturday, Griner and her wife said, “Our hearts are filled with great concern” for Gershkovich and his family. They added, “We must do everything in our power to bring him and all Americans home.”
Griner, who was held in Russia for most of last year, also urged the Biden administration to “use every tool possible” to secure the release of Gershkovich. She said, “Every American who is taken is ours to fight for and every American returned is a win for us all.”
Gershkovich, 31, was taken into custody by Russian security officials on Thursday and accused of spying. President Joe Biden has called for his release, saying it is “unacceptable” for Russia to detain an American journalist on such charges.
The Wall Street Journal, for which Gershkovich works, has “vehemently” denied the charges and called for his immediate release. The Biden administration has also said it is “deeply concerned” by the arrest and is working to secure Gershkovich’s release.
