Shane Hoskins, 31, was charged with two counts of grand larceny and one count of identity theft on Thursday, accused of drugging and then stealing more than $500 from two people in April 2022.
John Umberger, 33, and Julio Ramirez, 25, died about five weeks apart last spring. Prosecutors allege that Hoskins and four unidentified co-conspirators would approach intoxicated people outside bars or nightclubs in Manhattan, engage them in conversation and then offer them drugs “for the purpose of incapacitating them and facilitating the theft of their property.”
The indictment also alleges that the group would then steal the victims’ wallets, credit cards, and other items of value.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has charged multiple suspects in connection with the deaths of Umberger and Ramirez. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the NYPD.
