Oscar Pistorius Set to Attend Parole Hearing to Decide Fate of 10-Year Prison Sentence

Former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius is set to attend a parole hearing on Friday that will decide if he can be released from prison 10 years after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The hearing will be held by South Africa’s parole board, who will consider Pistorius’ conduct and disciplinary record in prison, his participation in educational or other training courses during the last decade of incarceration, and his mental and physical state to assess whether he would still pose a threat to public safety.

The murder trial in 2014 kept viewers around the world glued to the live courtroom broadcast as prosecutors argued that the elite athlete dad deliberately shot his girlfriend through a locked bathroom door in the middle of the night. Pistorius was convicted of murder in Steenkamp’s Valentine’s Day 2013 killing.

If Pistorius’ parole is granted, he could leave the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Pretoria on Friday, although the Department of Corrections said the process may take days to finalize.

Pistorius, now 36, has been in prison since 2014 and his parole hearing is the latest step in his legal journey. The outcome of the hearing will determine whether he will be released from prison and allowed to return to society.
