A freight train derailed in western Arizona Wednesday evening, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said, though it was initially believed to be carrying hazardous materials.

Anita Mortensen, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said the train was reported to have hazardous materials onboard, but said there had been no reports of spills.

However, a spokesperson for BNSF Railway later confirmed that the train was carrying corn syrup. There were no injuries reported and the wreck was not blocking any travel in the area.

The derailment occurred near the town of Topock, close to Arizona’s border with California. The area has been subject to recent storms, and there are washes running through the area, though no spills have been reported.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. It is not yet known which company the freight train belonged to.
