President Joe Biden announced Monday that former President Jimmy Carter has asked him to deliver his eulogy when he passes away.
Biden made the remarks at a fundraiser in Rancho Santa Fe, California, according to a White House pool report.
“I spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” Biden said. “He asked me to do his eulogy – excuse me, I shouldn’t say that.”
Carter, 91, was diagnosed in 2015 with skin cancer that had spread to his liver and brain. After treatment, he was declared cancer-free in December of that year.
Since then, Carter has remained in hospice care. He is currently the longest-living president in United States history.
Biden and Carter have a long history of friendship and mutual respect. In 2002, Carter presented Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The former president has also been a vocal supporter of Biden’s presidential campaign, endorsing him in the 2020 election.
Biden’s remarks on Monday reflect the admiration and respect he has for Carter. He has not yet commented on the request to deliver the eulogy.
