Large Group of Migrants Attempts to Breach U.S.-Mexico Border, Prompting Increased Security Measures

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, Border Patrol Agents, and El Paso Police were present at the Paso Del Norte International Bridge, which links El Paso to Juarez, Mexico, on Sunday. The bridge was closed off with traffic barriers, concertina wire, and agents in riot gear after a large group of migrants attempted to breach the border.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Roger Maier, the group of individuals posed a potential threat to make a mass entry. The group, mainly composed of Venezuelans, had gathered near the entrance of the bridge around noon.

The migrants had been frustrated by delays and difficulties in applying for asylum in the United States after long journeys through Central America and Mexico. Some believed they would be allowed entry due to a rumor of a “day of the migrant” celebration.

Despite the incident, Maier stated that the bridge was safe and flowing freely Sunday night. He also noted that the incident was an example of the dangers posed by large groups attempting to enter the United States illegally.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following the proper procedures for seeking asylum in the United States. It also highlights the need for increased security at the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
