The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Lifeguard Division received a 911 transfer call from a Spanish-speaking woman shortly before midnight on Saturday night. The woman reported that she had been on a panga with 15 people and had made it to the shore after the vessel overturned in the surf.
The woman also reported that another panga with eight people had capsized and victims were in the water, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm. However, the woman’s estimate of 15 people on the boat was just an estimate, Brahm said.
Rescue crews continued their search on Sunday for additional missing victims, but officials have not confirmed the nationalities of the victims.
