Four U.S. citizens were kidnapped in a brazen attack carried out by multiple gunmen in the northern Mexico border city of Matamoros, the FBI said. Latavia “Tay” Washington McGee, 33, Shaeed Woodard, Zindell Brown and their friend Eric were traveling from South Carolina to Matamoros for a medical procedure when their white minivan with North Carolina license plates came under fire shortly after it entered Mexico.

The four friends were a tight-knit group, according to two family members. McGee was a mother of six and was headed to the border city for a medical procedure. After the vehicle was fired upon, the four Americans were taken from the scene by armed men, according to the FBI San Antonio Division office.

On Sunday, McGee’s mother Barbara Burgess said she was informed by the FBI that her daughter had been kidnapped and was in danger. Mexican authorities are still searching for the missing Americans.

The U.S. government has yet to respond to the kidnapping, but the FBI has said it is working with Mexican law enforcement to locate the four Americans. The FBI is asking anyone with information to contact the San Antonio Field Office at 210-225-6741.
