Republican Rep.-elect George Santos of New York is set to be sworn in as a lawmaker on Tuesday, but he is currently facing an embezzlement charge from Brazilian law enforcement.
Documents obtained by CNN show that in 2008, Santos, then 19 years old and living in Rio de Janeiro with his mother, stole a checkbook belonging to 82-year-old Délio da Câmara da Costa Alemão, a client of his mother’s. Santos used two of the checks to purchase $700 worth of clothing and shoes at a store in Niteroi, a city outside of Rio de Janeiro.
Santos admitted to the theft in a statement he gave to police in 2010, according to 150 pages worth of case documents. He used an ID card with the checkbook owner’s name and a picture of himself to make the purchase.
The case has been ongoing since 2008, and Santos has been wanted by Brazilian law enforcement since then. It is unclear what the outcome of the case will be, but Santos is set to be sworn in as a lawmaker on Tuesday.
Santos has not yet commented on the case, but his office has stated that he is “committed to resolving the matter in a timely manner.” It is unclear what the outcome of the case will be, but it is sure to be a topic of discussion as Santos is sworn in as a lawmaker on Tuesday.
