The California Board of Parole Hearings on Wednesday denied parole for Robert F. Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan, citing his lack of insight into the 1968 shooting of the senator and presidential candidate.
Sirhan, now 78 years old, has been in prison since his conviction in 1969. He has been denied parole 15 times since his first hearing in 1985.
Sirhan’s lawyer, Angela Berry, argued that her client has shown awareness of his actions and that his psychiatrists have said for decades that he is unlikely to re-offend or be a danger to society. However, the board said that Sirhan still lacked insight into what caused him to shoot Kennedy.
Berry said she believes the new board members on Wednesday were influenced by California Governor Gavin Newsom and by the lawyers representing Kennedy’s widow and some of his children — several relatives of the slain politician are opposed to Sirhan’s release.
Sirhan’s next parole hearing is scheduled for 2023. He will be 83 years old at that time.
