Former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., has joined the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics as a professor of practice. The announcement was made Wednesday by the center’s director, Larry Sabato.
Cheney was the third highest-ranking Republican in the House when she voted to impeach former President Donald Trump one week after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. She was subsequently ousted from House GOP leadership and lost a primary battle last year.
Sabato praised Cheney for her courage and willingness to pay the price for her principles. “Preserving our constitutional republic is the most important work of our time, and our nation’s young people will play a crucial role in this effort,” he said.
In a statement shared by the center, Cheney said she hopes her work at the university will “contribute to finding lasting solutions that not only preserve but strengthen our democracy” at a time when “there are many threats facing our system of government.”
The Center for Politics at the University of Virginia is dedicated to educating citizens about politics and policy, and Cheney’s role as professor of practice will focus on engaging students and the public in the political process.
