A violent dog attack in a residential neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas, has left one elderly man dead and three others injured, according to authorities. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood described the scene as “horrific,” saying that firefighters had to fight off multiple pit bulls with “pick-axes and pipe poles” in order to reach the two victims, an elderly man and woman.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. local time, firefighters responded to a report of a dog bite and arrived to find the elderly man “being dragged by a dog,” Hood said. The man, believed to be in his 80s, was killed in the attack, while the woman, who may have been his wife, was critically injured.
The victims were not believed to be connected to the residence where the dogs lived, and it is unclear why the animals attacked. Hood said that the attack occurred on a sidewalk and that the firefighters could see the man “completely bloodied” before they got off the fire truck.
The San Antonio Police Department is currently investigating the incident and the dogs have been taken into custody. No further information has been released at this time.
