Liz Cheney Criticizes Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Suggestion to Divide the United States and Shrink the Federal Government as “Unconstitutional

Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has publicly criticized Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for her suggestion to divide the United States into red and blue states and to “shrink the federal government.” In a tweet responding to Greene, Cheney said the far-right lawmaker’s remarks were “unconstitutional.”

On Monday, Greene posted a tweet that read, “We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government. We need a national divorce.” In October 2021, she had also polled her Twitter followers on whether they thought the U.S. should “have a national divorce.”

Cheney responded to Greene’s tweet by saying, “Our country is governed by the Constitution. No member of Congress should advocate secession, Marjorie.” She also noted that Greene had previously been accused of calling for civil war in a Presidents Day tweet.

Greene has been a vocal supporter of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. She has also previously floated the idea of secession. Cheney’s criticism of Greene’s suggestion to divide the country into red and blue states and to “shrink the federal government” comes as a reminder that the United States is governed by the Constitution.
