United Airlines announced on Monday that it will be introducing a new seat map feature to help families with children under 12 find seats together free of charge. The new technology will dynamically find available adjacent Economy seats at the time of booking and open up complimentary upgrades to other available seats as needed.

The airline will give parents or other adult travelers accompanying a child younger than 12 access to “preferred” seats as well as regular economy seats, if needed, at the time of booking so they can sit together. In cases where side-by-side seats are not available, customers will be able to switch to another flight to their destination with adjacent seats without paying a fare difference.

The new seat map feature will be fully in effect next month, although United has already increased some of the seat availability. The change applies to travelers with standard and basic economy tickets.

The move comes after the Biden administration has recently drawn scrutiny for charging fees for families to sit together on flights. United Airlines said it hopes the new feature will make it easier for families to travel together and ensure that children are seated with an adult in their party.

The airline also said it is committed to providing customers with a safe and comfortable travel experience. It is encouraging customers to check the United Airlines website for updates on the new seat map feature and other travel developments.
