Tragedy struck the soccer world on Saturday as the body of Ghanaian soccer star Christian Atsu was recovered from the ruins of a 12-story building in Antakya, Hatay province in Turkey. Atsu had been living in the building when the devastating earthquake struck the region on February 6th.

Atsu had recently joined Turkish club Hatayspor in September and had scored the winning goal for his new team in a league game at home against Kasimpaşa S.K. just hours before the earthquake.

Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, announced the news of his death on Twitter, saying, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.”

Manager Murat Uzunmehmet told private news agency DHA, “Atsu’s lifeless body was found under the rubble. At the moment, his belongings are still being removed.”

Hatayaspor also released a statement on Twitter, saying that Atsu’s body will be sent to Ghana.

The soccer world is mourning the loss of Atsu, with many expressing their condolences to his family and loved ones.
