Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland to receive treatment for clinical depression, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Adam Jentleson.

Jentleson said that Fetterman has experienced depression “off and on throughout his life,” but that it only became severe in recent weeks. Earlier this month, his office said he was hospitalized after feeling lightheaded, but tests ruled out another stroke.

“John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis,” Jentleson said. Fetterman suffered a stroke last year before winning the Pennsylvania Senate race in a highly competitive contest.

“After examining John, the doctors at Walter Reed told us that John is getting the care he needs, and will soon be back to himself,” Jentleson said.

Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, said in a statement that she is “grateful for the care and attention John is receiving.” She also thanked the staff at Walter Reed for their “compassion and professionalism.”

The statement from Fetterman’s office said that the senator is “in good spirits and looking forward to getting back to work soon.”
