The FBI has conducted two searches in recent weeks at the University of Delaware as part of an ongoing investigation into President Joe Biden’s retention and handling of classified documents, according to two senior law enforcement officials familiar with the probe.

Justice Department officials, as well as the FBI, also interviewed a University of Delaware archivist who handled Mr. Biden’s material, the sources said. The searches were conducted within the last month, the first search took place toward the end of January, and the second at the beginning of February, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The documents removed did not have classified markings on them but included materials that required more scrutiny, the source told CBS News. As with the previous searches of Biden’s residences in Delaware and an office in Washington, D.C., that he used after the Obama administration, the president’s lawyers arranged for the searches with the Justice Department and consented to all Justice Department demands for the searches, so no warrants were issued, the sources said.

The FBI personnel removed multiple boxes from the premises. The Justice Department’s investigation into the handling of documents with classified markings from President Joe Biden’s time as vice president was first reported by CNN on Wednesday.

It is unclear what the FBI is looking for in the documents or if the investigation is related to any other ongoing probes. It is also unclear if the investigation is related to the ongoing investigation into former President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. The Justice Department has not commented on the investigation.
