The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a “safety call to action” and will form a safety review team following a string of concerning airline incidents.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating an incident that occurred on January 23 at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. A United Airlines 777 jet improperly crossed a runway while a smaller, single-engine cargo plane operated by Kamaka Air was landing.

The FAA has also opened an inquiry into a third runway close-call involving an airliner in less than a month. In January, a Delta Air Lines plane about to take off was ordered to halt when controllers noticed an American Airlines aircraft crossing its path at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

In response to these incidents, FAA Acting Administrator Billy Nolen released a memo on Tuesday, stating, “We are experiencing the safest period in aviation history, but we cannot take this for granted.” The memo also announced the FAA’s safety call to action and the formation of a safety review team.

United Airlines has not yet responded to the incident in Honolulu. The NTSB is continuing to investigate the incident and the FAA is working to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
