The 43rd annual Islands Ice Fishing Derby on Vermont’s Lake Champlain was cancelled over the weekend after three men died when they fell through the ice due to “abnormally warm” weather.

The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department issued a request for the derby to be cancelled “effective immediately” on Saturday, asking anglers already out on the ice to clear the area.

The first death occurred on Thursday when 62-year-old Wayne Alexander from Grand Isle, Vermont, fell through the ice. His body was found in the water hours after he was expected to return home.

On Saturday, two brothers died after their utility vehicle broke through the ice, police said.

Organizers of the tournament announced in a Facebook post on Saturday morning that the weekend-long event was being cancelled due to “the condition of the ice.”

The deaths have been attributed to the unusually warm weather, which has caused the ice to be thinner than usual. The Vermont State Police are continuing to investigate the deaths.
