Authorities in New Jersey are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday morning in the parking lot of the PSE&G Central Division headquarters building in Somerset. Russell Heller, 51, a Republican council member representing the Milford area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office has identified Gary T. Curtis, 58, of Washington, as the shooter. Curtis was a former employee of PSE&G, and is believed to have approached Heller in the parking lot and shot him outside his vehicle.

Hours later, detectives were able to track Curtis down to a parking lot area in Bridgewater Township, where they found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting of Heller marks the second attack in seven days in New Jersey where an act of gun violence resulted in the death of a local elected official. Last week, a female politician was gunned down in her car.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating the shooting, and has not released any further information at this time.
