The House Oversight and Accountability Committee has made its first official requests for documents from President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his brother, James Biden, as part of its investigation into any possible involvement by the president in their foreign business dealings.
In letters obtained by CBS News, Chairman James Comer of Kentucky informed Hunter and James Biden, as well as their then-business manager, that he is seeking documents and communications related to their financial conduct, in particular with individuals connected to the Chinese Communist Party. Comer accused them in his letter of receiving “significant amounts of money from foreign companies without providing any.”
On Thursday, the Republican-led committee sent a formal request to Hunter Biden for information and records related to his business dealings. The panel is also seeking records from James Biden and Hunter’s business partner, Eric Schwerin.
In a statement on Thursday, Chairman Comer said the committee is investigating whether the president was involved in his family’s business dealings and “whether any foreign entities sought to influence the president or his administration by providing financial benefits to his family members.”
The committee has not yet indicated when it expects to receive the requested documents.
