On Tuesday, a funeral was held in Syria for the family of a baby who was born under the rubble of her home in Jinderis, Syria, after it was destroyed by a massive earthquake and aftershocks that devastated the region on Monday.
The baby was the only member of her family to survive from the building collapse. Residents discovered the crying infant whose mother appeared to have given birth to her while buried underneath the rubble of a five-story apartment building.
Khalil al-Suwadi, the baby’s father’s cousin, told the AFP news agency, “We heard a voice while we were digging.” The baby was still tied by her umbilical cord to her mother when she was pulled alive from the rubble.
Ramadan Sleiman, a relative, told The Associated Press, “We cleared the dust and found the baby crying.” The baby was taken to a clinic in Afrin, where she received medical care.
The earthquake and aftershocks have caused widespread destruction in the region, particularly in the rebel-held town of Jinderis, next to the Turkish border. The death toll from the earthquake is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
