Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu has been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in Turkey following the deadly earthquakes that hit the country and neighboring Syria. Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, told CNN on Tuesday that his client was in a “stable” condition at a local hospital after being successfully rescued from the rubble.

The Ghana Football Association announced the 31-year-old winger, who played for the country during the 2014 World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, was “successfully rescued” on Tuesday and is receiving treatment.

The Turkish ambassador to Ghana, Huseyin Avni Karslioglu, has called for more rescue teams to be sent to the region to help with the crisis. He said, “We need a lot of rescue teams. We need medical teams. We need search and rescue teams.”

Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor in Turkey, had been celebrating on Sunday after his team won the Turkish Cup. He was in the city of Hatay when the earthquake struck, causing buildings to collapse and leaving hundreds of people injured.

The Ghana Football Association has asked people to continue to pray for Christian Atsu. They tweeted, “Let’s continue to pray for Christian.”

The death toll from the earthquake is expected to rise as search and rescue teams continue to work in the area. The Turkish government has declared a state of emergency in the region and is providing aid to those affected.
