Americans for Prosperity Action, the main political arm of the Koch network, is preparing to back a single Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential primary, a move that could significantly reshape the GOP field.
In a memo released Sunday, Emily Seidel, the CEO of Americans for Prosperity and a top adviser at AFP Action, wrote to supporters and donors that “the best thing for the country would be to have a president in 2025 who represents a new chapter.”
The memo does not mention Donald Trump, but an official with AFP Action confirmed to CNN that the network is not planning to support the former president’s White House bid. This is in contrast to the past couple of GOP presidential cycles, in which the group has sat out.
The deep-pocketed network associated with billionaire Charles Koch is now actively looking to back an alternative during the Republican presidential primary. Seidel wrote in the memo that AFP Action is “prepared to support a candidate in the Republican presidential primary who can lead our country forward, and who can win.”
The Club for Growth, another conservative organization, has also openly worked to oppose Trump’s 2024 candidacy. It remains to be seen which candidate AFP Action will support, and how much influence the group will have on the Republican primary race.
