On Friday, a massive traffic pileup on Interstate 39/90 in southern Wisconsin left more than two dozen people injured and the highway blocked for hours.
The Wisconsin State Patrol said in a statement that snow, ice, and whiteout conditions were factors in the crash, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time in Rock County between Janesville and Beloit. Beloit Memorial Hospital reported that at least 27 people were treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
Beloit Health System, a medical center located in Beloit, Wisconsin, confirmed that it was treating approximately 27 patients from the accident. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle accident in both the north and south lanes of Interstate 39/90 amid slippery, snowy conditions in Turtle, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin State Patrol said that the highway was blocked for hours due to the crash.
“We continue to work with local and county EMS but have been notified we will not receive any more patients,” said Beloit spokesperson Tami Scarpetta.
