The New Mexico District Attorney’s office has announced criminal charges against actor and producer Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed in connection with the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western film “Rust” in October 2021.
District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb said Thursday that they had determined there was sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Baldwin and other members of the “Rust” film crew. Baldwin is being charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The incident occurred during rehearsals for the film, when Baldwin held a Colt gun that discharged a live round that killed Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza.
Reeb said that they had been confident that criminal charges would be filed “pretty close to the beginning” of their investigation.
“We felt very confident that it was going to be a criminal case pretty close to the beginning, once we started looking at everything,” Reeb said.
Baldwin’s attorney, Robert Gottlieb, said in a statement that his client was “devastated” by the tragedy and that he was “fully cooperating with the investigation.”
Gottlieb said Baldwin “is not above the law and he is somebody who committed a crime, and we’re going to hold him to the law.”
The District Attorney’s office said that they are confident they will win convictions in their case against Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed. The case is ongoing and no further details have been released.
