Charlotte FC defender Anton Walkes has died at the age of 25 following a boating accident in Miami, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The FWC said that, around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, officers attended a two-vessel accident near the Miami Marine Stadium basin. Walkes was found unconscious after the collision and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after Miami Fire-Rescue reportedly attempted CPR at the scene. He later died from his injuries.
Charlotte FC’s sporting director Zoran Krneta said, “We are heartbroken from the loss of Anton Walkes, a truly incredible father, loving person and outstanding human being.” The club also confirmed the “tragic and heartbreaking” death in a statement.
Walkes was a defender for Charlotte FC and had previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Atlanta United. He had been with Charlotte FC since 2019 and had made 16 appearances for the club.
