On Wednesday morning, a Georgia state trooper was shot and wounded near the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a controversial future law enforcement training site. The incident occurred during a planned clearing operation conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and several other law enforcement agencies.

According to GBI Director Mike Register, an individual allegedly shot at law enforcement without warning at approximately 9:00 a.m. Police returned fire and the alleged shooter was killed. The wounded trooper was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The proposed $90 million, 85-acre center is to be built in a forested area in a neighboring county. Activists have clashed with law enforcement at the site and have camped out for months in the forest in an attempt to halt construction. The site has been nicknamed “Cop City” by protesters.
