A missing woman’s remains were found in Florida over the weekend, almost 12 years after she disappeared while driving home from a date near Disney World. Sandra Lemire’s body was inside of a minivan that sunk 14 feet in a retention pond off the side of an interstate highway, according to the rescue group Sunshine State Sonar, who helped officials find her remains.

The case went cold until last week when Sunshine State Sonar received new details from the Orlando Police Department. Mike Sullivan, with Sunshine State Sonar, told CBS affiliate WKMG that the recovery team was able to find Lemire using technology that was not available when she went missing in 2012. This information led them to a pond in Kissimmee, Florida, where the red minivan Lemire was driving had ended up following a car accident.

Sunshine State Sonar is a volunteer search and recovery team based in Florida that specializes in sonar and underwater technology. Lemire had vanished in May 2012 after going on a date with a man she met online. Sullivan said, “It turned out to be just a bad, terrible car accident.”

The Orlando Police Department is now investigating the case and Lemire’s family is relieved to finally have closure. Lemire’s sister, Jennifer, said, “It’s been a long 12 years and we are so thankful for the hard work of the Orlando Police Department and Sunshine State Sonar.”

The Orlando Police Department has not released any further information about the case. Lemire’s family is asking for privacy as they grieve the loss of their loved one.
