The search for a missing Hawaii fisherman continued on Tuesday, two days after he fell overboard while trying to reel in a “huge” tuna.

Mark Knittle, 63, of Captain Cook, was fishing with a friend off Honaunau on the Big Island on Sunday when he hooked an ahi, or tuna. According to the Hawaii Police Department, the friend heard Knittle say, “The fish is huge,” before he went overboard into the water.

The Coast Guard and the Hawaii Fire Department have been searching the waters off Hōnaunau, on the Big Island’s west coast, since Sunday. The Coast Guard is using a cutter and aircraft and the fire department is using a boat.

Deputy Fire Chief Eric Moller said conditions have been favorable for the search, and they are expected to continue looking for Knittle until sundown. If he is not found, authorities will determine next steps.

Knittle’s family and friends are hoping for the best, and are asking for prayers for his safe return.
