The incident involving an F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing happened early Monday over the Yellow Sea, the U.S. Air Force said in a statement. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The pilot, who was not identified, was “awake and in stable condition” after being rescued by South Korean maritime forces, the U.S. 8th Fighter Wing said in a statement.
“We are grateful for the safe recovery of our Airman by our ROK Allies and that the pilot is in good condition,” said Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, the 8th Fighter Wing’s commander, according to the statement.
The pilot will be evaluated further back at base. The U.S. Air Force is thankful for the assistance of the Republic of Korea in the safe recovery of the pilot. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
