In an exclusive interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited former U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine. Zelenskyy warned that he could debunk Trump’s claim that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours if he is re-elected in 2024.
“Former President Trump said that [in] about 24 hours, that he can manage it and finish the war,” Zelenskyy said. “So, I invite President Trump. If he can come here, I will need 24 minutes, yes, 24 minutes, not more, to explain [to] President Trump that he can’t manage this war, he can’t bring peace because of the Putin.”
The war between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion. Zelenskyy believes that only by visiting Ukraine can Trump understand the details of the conflict.
“President Biden was here, and he — I think he understood some details which you can understand only being here,” Zelenskyy said. “If he’s not trying and if he’s not coming here, he will never understand what is going on here.”
Despite the warning, Zelenskyy said that Trump is “very welcome” to visit Ukraine. It remains to be seen if Trump will take up the invitation and if he will be able to prove his claim that he can end the war in 24 hours.
