Hundreds of protesters descended on Grand Central Terminal in New York City on Friday evening, calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. The demonstration, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, saw over 200 protesters wearing black t-shirts with slogans such as “Jews say cease-fire now” and “Not in our name”.

The protesters filled the main concourse of the station, chanting slogans and unfurling banners demanding a cease-fire as Israel intensified its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said the protesters were taken briefly into custody, issued summonses and released.

“Right now, you are hearing thousands of Jewish New Yorkers who are raising our voices so clear that our safety can never come at the expense of another community’s safety,” said Jewish Voice for Peace spokesperson Jay Saper.

The demonstration was part of a larger effort to pressure the Biden administration to take a stronger stance on the conflict. The Biden administration has so far refused to call for a ceasefire, instead calling for a “sustainable calm”.

The demonstration was peaceful, and the NYPD said that no injuries were reported. The exact number of detentions will be available Saturday morning.
