Donald Trump Declares Neutrality in Race for House Speaker, Jokingly Suggests Jesus Christ as Candidate

Former President Donald Trump has declared he will remain neutral in the race to replace House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). On Friday, Trump told reporters in New Hampshire that he was “staying above it” and that the Republican Party would “get it straightened out”.

The race for a new speaker has been ongoing for the past four weeks, with the nomination of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) being rescinded by fellow House Republicans last week. Trump has since refrained from endorsing any of the nine candidates in the running.

In a tongue-in-cheek comment, Trump suggested that Jesus Christ may be the best candidate for the position. His comment was an apt point, as the Republican Party has yet to coalesce behind a single speaker candidate.

Trump’s decision to stay out of the race for speaker comes as he filed to appear on the state’s Republican presidential primary ballot next year. It is unclear if Trump will eventually endorse a candidate for speaker, but for now he is remaining neutral.
