House Republicans Stalemated in Attempt to Elect New Speaker of the House, Rep. Buck Calls for Temporary Speakership to Break Impasse

House Republicans are facing a stalemate in their attempt to elect a new Speaker of the House. Rep. Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio, has been unable to secure enough votes to win the gavel, and Rep. Ken Buck, Republican of Colorado, believes the current impasse can only be broken by a temporary speakership.

Rep. Buck told “The Takeout” podcast this week that Jordan “bleeds three or four votes” with each attempt to win the speaker’s gavel, and that he would be down to 25 or 26 votes if he goes to the floor again. Buck believes that Republicans should look to a temporary speakership to break the current impasse, so the House can move legislation to aid Israel and Ukraine and keep the government operating.

Buck also noted that some Republicans have “folded” under intense pressure from grassroots Republican activists. He pointed out that others have not only resisted outside pressure but have become more adamant in their stance.
