A 25-year-old singer has filed a lawsuit against pop star Jason Derulo, accusing him of sexual harassment. Emaza Gibson alleges that Derulo pressured her to drink and have sex with him after signing her to his record label and then dropped her when she refused his advances.
Gibson said that after Derulo had signed her with the promise of collaborating on several albums, he used physical aggression to intimidate her and then refused to record with her once she insisted on maintaining a strictly professional relationship with him.
Gibson said that she was thrilled when Derulo reached out with the promise of a record deal. She said it was a dream offer, the realization of years of hard work and dedication. However, she said that the deal came with strings and struggles she’d never experienced before: aggressive behavior, unwanted invitations, implications that she’d have to have sex with him to advance and fear for her safety.
In an interview with NBC News, Gibson said, “I shouldn’t have to sleep with anybody to secure a deal. I’m at this point in my life right now, it’s very heartbreaking. I worked really hard.”
Gibson claims that she was deprived of the resources and funding to complete and promote the planned album. She is seeking damages for the emotional distress she suffered as a result of Derulo’s alleged behavior. Derulo has yet to comment on the allegations.
