Key takeaways:

  • Donald Trump is reportedly considering a visit to the U.S. Capitol early next week to unify the Republican party.
  • Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the speakership.
  • Jordan is seen as a favorite among the far-right Republicans, and his endorsement by Trump could be a decisive factor in the race for the speakership.

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a visit to the U.S. Capitol early next week, according to sources. The visit is said to be part of an effort to unify the Republican party following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) earlier this week.

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) said he had a “great conversation” with Trump about the process to replace McCarthy. Nehls, who is supporting Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the speakership, posted online Thursday night that Trump will back Jordan’s candidacy.

The ousting of McCarthy was a shocking turn of events, as eight far-right Republicans — led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) — voted to strip him of his gavel, a first such ouster in the chamber’s history.

Trump has not set foot on Capitol grounds since before the Jan. 6 riot, and his potential visit is seen as a way to bring the party together. It is unclear at this time if Trump will actually make the visit, but his endorsement of Jordan is seen as a major boost to the Ohio congressman’s candidacy.

Jordan is seen as a favorite among the far-right Republicans, and his endorsement by Trump could be a decisive factor in the race for the speakership. The House is expected to vote on the new speaker on Jan. 3, 2021.
