R’Bonney Gabriel, a fashion designer, model and sewing instructor from Texas, was crowned Miss Universe on Saturday night at the 71st Miss Universe Competition. She is the first Filipino American to win the title.

The competition began with 84 women from around the world competing for the crown. After a series of eliminations, the last two contestants were Gabriel and Miss Venezuela, Amanda Dudamel. In the Q&A at the last stage of the competition for the three finalists, Gabriel was asked how she would work to demonstrate Miss Universe is “an inclusive organization.” Gabriel responded that she hoped the organization would continue to be a platform for women to empower and inspire each other.

At the moment of the dramatic reveal of the winner, Gabriel closed her eyes and clasped hands with runner-up Dudamel. After her name was announced, Gabriel was handed a bouquet of flowers, draped in the winner’s sash and crowned with a tiara onstage.
