On Friday, tragedy struck the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department when Deputy Darnell Calhoun was shot and killed in the line of duty. Calhoun, 30, was responding to a domestic violence call related to a child custody issue in the unincorporated area of Lakeland Village when the incident occurred.

At 4:20 p.m., Calhoun was the first deputy to arrive at the scene on Hilldale Lane. A shootout then occurred between the second deputy and the suspect, and Calhoun was found lying in the street suffering from gunshot injuries. He was transported to a hospital in serious condition, but later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was shot and taken to a hospital where he is in critical condition.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco expressed his sorrow during a news conference Friday night. “We are devastated to announce the passing of Deputy Darnell Calhoun who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon,” he said.

Calhoun had been with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department since 2018 and was a dedicated public servant. He is survived by his wife and two children.
