Former President Donald Trump said in an interview aired Sunday that he was the one who decided to challenge the 2020 election result, despite his lawyers and advisers telling him he had lost.

In an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump said it was his decision to describe the 2020 presidential election as “rigged” and that he “didn’t respect” some of the lawyers he had hired.

“It was my decision,” Trump said when asked why he ignored his lawyers and advisers. “Sure but that doesn’t mean — you know you hire ’em, you’ve never met these people, you get a recommendation, they turn out to be RINO’s, in many cases, I didn’t respect them.”

When asked why he was listening to them, Trump replied: “Some people said that.”

Legal experts said Trump’s comments could be damaging to his legal defense, as he admitted to making the decision to challenge the election result himself.

Trump’s comments come as he faces legal challenges from multiple states over his claims of election fraud. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has continued to insist that the election was “rigged” against him.

The former president’s legal team has yet to comment on his remarks. It remains to be seen how his comments will affect his legal defense going forward.
