Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Clark told NBC News that Cavalcante intended to travel to Canada, and told officers after his arrest that he had survived on the lam by eating watermelon from a farm and burying himself beneath leaves and brush to avoid detection.
Cavalcante was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two young children and had escaped from Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township on August 31. He was found to have a razor blade in his backpack when he was captured.
