A New York City mother is suing Peloton, claiming that her son was killed by their exercise bike just six months after buying it. The lawsuit, filed in March in New York Supreme Court, alleges that Ryan Furtado, 32, was doing a “core” workout on the pricey exercise bike on Jan. 13, 2022 when he disembarked to complete a few exercises on the floor. When he attempted to rise from the floor, he used his bike to help him get up, but it soon “spun around” and hit his neck and face, severing his carotid artery and “killing him instantly,” the lawsuit charges.

Johanna Furtado, Ryan’s mother, is asking for damages for “pain, suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-economic damages,” as well as medical expenses and other damages, including the cost of past and future medical and psychiatric care. Peloton, however, insists that Ryan’s own negligence caused his death.

The lawsuit claims that the Peloton bike is “dangerous” and that the company failed to warn consumers of the potential risks of using the bike. It also alleges that the company failed to provide adequate instructions on how to safely use the bike.

The lawsuit is seeking damages for Ryan’s family, including medical expenses, funeral costs, and other damages. It is also seeking punitive damages to punish Peloton for its alleged negligence.

The case is currently pending in New York Supreme Court. Peloton has yet to respond to the lawsuit, but the company has previously stated that it stands behind its products and that it takes the safety of its customers seriously.
