Daring Expedition to Uncover the Secrets of the Great White Shark Underway

A daring expedition to unlock the mystery of the great white shark is underway, as researchers from Russia and France attempt to locate the species’ mating site. On Wednesday, the three sailors involved in the mission were rescued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) after their inflatable catamaran came under attack from sharks in the Coral Sea, more than 500 miles east of the Australian coast.

The catamaran, named “Russian Ocean Way — Tion”, had sustained significant damage to its hulls, with large sections missing. The expedition is led by Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Berezkin, both from Siberia. The rescue was completed by the Panamanian-flagged ship, the vehicle-carrying “Dugong Ace”.

The AMSA received an emergency beacon alert at around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, which Joe Zeller, a senior manager at AMSA, believes saved the sailors’ lives. “An emergency beacon absolutely saved their lives,” said Zeller.

The expedition is part of a larger effort to uncover the secrets of the great white shark. The species is notoriously elusive, and researchers have yet to determine the location of its mating site. The mission is the first of its kind, and the researchers hope to gain valuable insights into the behavior of the great white shark.

The rescued sailors have since been taken to the Australian port of Cairns, where they will receive medical attention and debriefing. The mission will continue, and the researchers are determined to unlock the mystery of the great white shark.
