Former President Donald Trump is leading the field in early-voting state polling for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination by double digits, but he has not yet said whether he will join his opponents on stage for the first primary debate in Milwaukee next week.

Karl Rove, a political contributor for Fox News and longtime GOP adviser, said on Thursday that Trump should join the debate to prove he is in charge. Rove acknowledged the danger for Trump of being attacked directly and indirectly by his opponents, some of whom might mention his four felony indictments.

At least eight Republican presidential candidates have qualified for the debate, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie, one of Trump’s most vocal critics. Rove suggested that a strong showing against these candidates would have a strong upside for Trump.

The other candidates have said they have been preparing for a debate with or without Trump. It remains to be seen if Trump will join the debate, but if he does, it will be a highly anticipated event.
