Pascale Cecile Veronique Ferrier, a 56-year-old dual citizen of Canada and France, was sentenced Thursday in Washington to 21 years and seven months in prison for sending a letter laced with the deadly toxin ricin to former President Donald Trump at the White House.

According to prosecutors, Ferrier had made the ricin at her home in Quebec and mailed the potentially deadly poison derived from processing castor beans to Trump with a letter. The letter stated that if the special gift didn’t ‘work,’ then the defendant would ‘find a better recipe for another poison.’

Ferrier had pleaded guilty in January to sending the homemade poison-laced letters to Trump and eight Texas law enforcement officials from her home in Quebec in September 2020.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said Ferrier’s actions were “unconscionable” and that her intent was to cause fear and chaos.

“The defendant’s actions were not only criminal, but also a direct attack on our nation’s system of government,” Mehta said.

Ferrier’s attorney, Sabrina Shroff, said her client had been suffering from mental health issues and had no intention of harming anyone. She said Ferrier was remorseful and had expressed her regret in a letter to the court.

Ferrier will be deported to Canada after serving her sentence.
