Key takeaways:

  • Richy Palalay is concerned that any homes rebuilt in the area will be targeted by affluent outsiders

Maui County reported that 19 structures were destroyed in the wildfires that broke out last Tuesday in the historic West Maui town of Lahaina and in Maui’s inland Upcountry region. Three structures in Olinda and 16 structures in Kula were destroyed, with crews continuing to battle flare-ups. The wildfires have so far killed at least 93 people as of Sunday morning, with others still missing.

Richy Palalay, a lifelong resident of Lahaina, is concerned that any homes rebuilt in the area will be targeted by affluent outsiders seeking a tropical haven. This is due to a chronic housing shortage and an influx of second-home buyers and wealthy transplants, which has been displacing local-born residents who can no longer afford to live in their homeland.

The displacement of Native Hawaiian and local-born residents is one of Hawaii’s gravest and biggest challenges. Maui Mayor Michael Victorino has said that the county is working to create more affordable housing and that the county is “committed to helping our residents who have been displaced by the fires.”

The county has set up a website to provide information to those affected by the fires, and is also offering assistance to those who have lost their homes. The county is also working with the state to provide temporary housing for those who have been displaced. The county is also working with the Red Cross to provide food, water, and other supplies to those affected by the fires.
